Community PrEP
PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a method of preventing HIV infection for HIV-negative people. The concept refers to the use of antiretroviral drugs before exposure to the virus, in order to develop protection against HIV and significantly reduce the risk of infection.
PrEP is considered the most innovative method of HIV prevention and consists of administering an antiretroviral drug that protects in the event of exposure to the virus. PrEP drugs can be administered at any time of the day, without dietary restrictions.
For men who have sex with men, PrEP can be used in two schemes: permanent or situational (“on-demand”), depending on the needs of each person. Combining PrEP with condom use provides maximum protection, significantly reducing the risk of HIV infection.
The community PrEP service operates directly within the GENDERDOC- M organization, in a safe, accessible and friendly space. Rapid access to PrEP in the community allows people to initiate prophylaxis without administrative barriers and in a confidential environment.
The service thus offers a complete combination of testing, counseling and treatment, ensuring effective protection and reducing the risk of HIV infection, in an accessible, safe and confidential way.
The service flow includes several essential steps:
offered by community consultants, to fully inform the beneficiary about PrEP, how to administer it, and the importance of HIV prevention.
carried out within the organization, includes rapid HIV testing and screening for sexually transmitted infections (syphilis and hepatitis B and C).
performed by the infectious disease physician present within the organization, who determines the initiation of PrEP and monitors the continuation of treatment.
Community consultants guide the beneficiary throughout the entire period of PrEP use, answering questions and providing constant support for adherence and correct use of prophylaxis.
