Over three days, film screenings, discussions, exhibitions and concerts opened up conversations about coming out, family support and the place of queer experiences in public life. The festival concluded with the inaugural VIZIBILX Gala, where 31 people received Courage Awards.

For GDM, Coming Out Days Fest provides an opportunity to connect several strands of the organisation’s work: supporting LGBT+ people and their families, raising public awareness, collaborating with artists and partner organisations, and preserving the history of the movement for equal rights in the Republic of Moldova.

Films and Conversations with Filmmakers

The film programme brought together fiction films and documentaries exploring family, identity, marginalisation, activism and war.

The festival opened with “Nebunul”, directed by Igor Cobileanski, preceded by a video message from the director to the audience. The opening evening, attended by 106 people, also featured a performance by the queer choir and an opportunity to visit the exhibitions.

The documentaries “The Price of Being Me” and “Mom, Dad, I’m Gay” were followed by a discussion with Georgian filmmaker Lia Jaqeli about coming out, family relationships and the circumstances in which LGBT+ people live in Georgia.

“Papa & Dada”, directed by Daniela Ambrosoli, explored the everyday lives of families in which children are raised by two fathers. “Queer Fighters of Ukraine”, made by Angelik Ustymenko and Alex King, presented the experiences of LGBT+ military personnel and activists in Ukraine. An online discussion with Angelik Ustymenko continued the conversation about the impact of war on the community and queer activism.

The programme also included films produced as part of “Queer Culture Against Disinformation”, a project implemented by the German organisation Quarteera in partnership with GENDERDOC-M.

Community History, Told by Those Who Lived It

At “Propaganda Brunch: How One Person Can Change the World”, 35 participants heard from the organisation’s founder, GENDERDOC-M’s first two directors and the Centre’s current director.

The conversation revisited some of the first public coming-out experiences in the Republic of Moldova in the early 2000s. The speakers discussed why they chose to become visible, the reactions they encountered, and the personal and professional consequences of being publicly out. Some came out on their own terms; others were outed, having their identity disclosed without their consent.

These accounts explored both the contribution of visibility to the development of the LGBT+ movement and the vulnerability that public exposure can bring.

Community memory was also represented through two photographic exhibitions. One traced the history of Pride marches, beginning with the earliest efforts to claim a place in public space, while the other documented the first symbolic queer weddings celebrated during Moldova Pride. The photographs and archival materials offered audiences insights into the history of the struggle for visibility, family rights and recognition.

Art as a Form of Participation

The discussion “Visibility Through Art” brought together perspectives from Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia and Armenia on LGBT+ representation and the risks that visibility can entail for queer artists in different social and political contexts.

At “Craftivism Brunch”, participants explored how handicrafts and other creative practices can communicate social messages and become forms of activism. The activity encouraged experimentation and the exchange of ideas, with no previous artistic experience required.

Music complemented these encounters: the band A P R O A P E, whose members largely belong to the LGBT+ community, performed a concert at the close of the programme on 10 October.

“Coming Out for Two”: A Child and a Parent in the Same Conversation

The gathering “Coming Out for Two” brought together 42 people, including 10 parents of LGBT+ children. It created a space for open dialogue about how coming out is experienced both by the person disclosing their identity and by their family.

Three mothers from different generations shared their initial reactions to their children’s coming out, their fears and difficulties, and the changes in their relationships over time. Their accounts showed how anxiety and uncertainty can give way to understanding, acceptance and support.

The discussion also explored the process parents go through: questions they do not yet have answers to, pressure from relatives and society, the need for information, and the effort involved in learning how to support their child. LGBT+ participants, in turn, were able to speak about their own expectations and the importance of family support.

An important thread running through the conversation was the need to maintain a broader perspective on family life. A child’s coming out is one of many experiences a family goes through, alongside other challenges, joys and changes, and should not come to define the entire relationship between children and their parents.

The gathering enabled families at different stages of this process to share their experiences. It also made room for questions from people preparing to come out or who do not yet feel ready to take that step.

The VIZIBILX Gala: Recognising Contributions and Bringing Overlooked Stories to Light

The inaugural VIZIBILX Gala continued the tradition of the Courage Awards, previously presented during the Moldova Pride Festival. In 2026, the awards became part of a dedicated event focused on visibility and coming out.

Preparations for the Gala included research into GENDERDOC-M’s archives and the reconstruction of the awards’ history since 2005. The team also identified people whose public coming out had contributed to the community’s visibility but who had not previously received an award, including members of the organisation’s own team.

The 31 award recipients included both LGBT+ people and family members who had spoken publicly about their relationships with their loved ones and openly expressed their support. The Gala thus also recognised the contribution of parents and other family members to creating a more accepting environment for LGBT+ people.

The closing event brought together 63 people and included a concert by Lia Burg.

Continuing the Conversation About Coming Out Beyond the Festival

To reach audiences who do not directly follow the organisation’s channels, GDM produced two journalistic pieces: an interview with Natalia Ozturk, coordinator of the Bee Parents support group, and the article “Coming Out: Why Speak About Who You Are When Society Is Not Ready to Listen?”

The interview drew on Natalia Ozturk’s approximately 22 years of experience working with parents of LGBT+ children, exploring families’ reactions and their need for support after a child comes out. The article explained the personal and social implications of disclosing one’s identity, with an emphasis on safety, confidentiality and consent.

The seventh edition of Coming Out Days Fest, organised by the GENDERDOC-M Information Centre from 9 to 11 October 2026 at NOD Space in Chișinău, brought together LGBT+ people, parents, artists and activists.
