Movie screening / Nanette

GENDERDOC-M Information Centre is pleased to invite you on Friday, 25 January, at 18:30, to the screening of “Nanette” stand-up comedy show.

Nanette (also known as Hannah Gadsby: Nanette) is a stand-up comedy act written and performed by Australian comedian Hannah Gadsby, which debuted in 2017. The work includes social commentary, especially about LGBTQ issues.

“I don’t want to unite you with laughter or anger,” she says. “I just needed my story felt and understood.”

Hannah Gadsby is an Australian comedian. She's an open lesbian and is repeatedly talking about her sexuality on stage. The topics she covers during her stand-up are living in a small city, dysfunctional parents, homosexuality, homophobia... but especially the trauma to which people from the margins are exposed and how it is projected in comedy.

“I built a career out of self-deprecation, and I don’t want to do that anymore,” she says. “Because you do understand what self-deprecation means from somebody who already exists in the margins? It’s not humility. It’s humiliation.” In Hannah's eyes, things like abuse and discrimination should not be turned into jokes. At this stand-up, she shows us a vivid paradox.

The screening will take place in English with Romanian subtitles.
Duration: 69 min.
